Vitamin B12 with Avocado Oil
Topical vitamin B12 cream may offer some atopic dermatitis and psoriasis patients a natural alternative to corticosteroids and topical immunomodulators, according to a new study.
Psoriasis is a non-contagious, progressive disease of the skin commonly characterized by red patches, lesions, or plaques covered with silvery white scales. Atopic dermatitis is another skin condition that is characterised by intense itching. There are several topical treatment options available, including topical vitamin D3 analogs, but most have been associated with unfavourable side effects such as irritation to the skin. Therefore, an innovative effective treatment with a good side effect profile is beneficial. Stucker et al performed an intraindividual right/left-side comparison of the vitamin D3 analog calcipotriol cream to the recently developed vitamin B12 cream containing avocado oil. During the 12 week trial, patients applied cream preparations of calcipotriol or vitamin B12 with avocado to psoriatic plaques twice daily on contralateral body sides of each patient. Overall, the effects of calcipotriol were more rapidly achieved than that of the vitamin B12 formulation but only significantly after the 8 weeks. By the end of the 12 weeks, there were no significant differences in the efficacy of the two treatments. In terms of tolerability, vitamin B12 with avocado oil was significantly more tolerable than calcipotriol.
A more recent study also done by Stucker et al evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of topical vitamin B12 against a placebo for atopic dermatitis. A total of 49 patients were included in the randomized phase III clinical trial with intraindividual left/right comparison. During the 8 weeks of treatment, patients applied the vitamin B12 product twice daily to the affected skin areas on one side of the body and the placebo on the contralateral side. A 2cm ribbon of cream was recommended for an area of roughly the size of the palm. Based on a modified Six Area Six Sign Atopic Dermatitis (SASSAD) score, the body side treated with the vitamin B cream experienced a significantly greater improvement than the placebo treated body side by almost double. Only a few mild adverse reactions (local skin irritation) were associated with use of the vitamin cream and all were reversible within several days.
Vitamin B12 inhibits production of inflammatory substances called cytokines and can trap nitric oxide, making it less harmful. Avocado oil contains vitamins A. B1, B2, Pantothenic acid, Vit. D, E, protein, lecithin and fatty acids that are required for healthy skin repair.
The topical Vitamin B12 with Avocado oil cream is available from The Green Dispensary for the treatment of plaque psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
